About

Inside Pincushion Hill

A Montessori school for children ages 18 months to 6 years, rooted in a tradition of careful, individualized education on an acre of organic farmland in Ashland, Massachusetts.

64

Years of Montessori education in Ashland, MA. One of New England's oldest independent Montessori schools.

Our Story

Pincushion Hill began on September 6, 1962, on an acre of organic farmland. The farmers who cared for this land were visionaries, protecting and nurturing it with a clear sense of what it could become. From the start, the school was built to offer children a place where academic learning and meaningful time in nature exist in harmony.

We are deeply committed to each child's education and to supporting families as a whole. Children here learn in a nurturing yet challenging environment, exploring hands-on materials and guided lessons in language, math, science, and geography. Our program fosters each child's natural curiosity, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Each day, our students arrive eager to greet their friends and start something new. Their joy and curiosity shape the thoughtful work we do: preparing vibrant, engaging spaces that support authentic Montessori education.

Mission

To foster independence and natural development in young children through Montessori education.

Our Campus

Our indoor classrooms are warm and inviting, thoughtfully designed with dedicated areas for mathematics, language, practical life, sensorial work, geography, science, and art. These calm spaces inspire children to learn, explore, and connect with one another.

Outdoors, children cultivate a deep connection to gardening and the natural world. This appreciation for nature and wonder is woven into our outdoor classroom experiences, enriching learning and building lifelong respect for the environment.

Ethics & Values

At Pincushion, ethics isn't a policy document gathering dust. It's the invisible architecture of everything we do. It shapes how we speak to children, how we communicate with families, and how we make decisions when things are hard.

  • 1The dignity of every child
We treat each child as a full, whole human being, deserving of respect, patience, and the freedom to develop at their own pace. No child is compared, rushed, or dismissed.
  • 2Radical honesty with families
We communicate what's real, even when it's uncomfortable. Families trust us with their children; that trust demands honesty about challenges, growth, and hard truths.
  • 3Accountability when we fail
When we fall short, we say so directly: to families, to each other, and to ourselves. We fix it, learn from it, and move forward without defensiveness.
