Summer Activities for Montessori Children

Pincushion Staff · June 4, 2026

Summer is a natural break in the rhythm of school — and for Montessori families, it's a chance to extend the learning into a different kind of environment. The goal isn't to keep a rigorous schedule. It's to keep the habits alive: the curiosity, the independence, the hands-on engagement with the real world.

"Find the balance between relaxation and preserving the routines and knowledge you and your child worked so hard to build this year."

Ideas for a Montessori summer

You don't need special materials or a structured curriculum. Most of these suggestions are simply about paying attention — giving a child real work, real choices, and real time.

  • Journaling — A blank notebook and a few minutes each day is enough. Drawing, writing, dictating — whatever level the child is at. It's also a keepsake they'll return to for years.

  • Family outings with a purpose — Farms, zoos, trails, historic sites. Let the child help plan. The involvement makes the experience stick.

  • Cooking together — Choosing a recipe, measuring, mixing, tasting. Every step teaches something real.

  • Gardening — Even a small patch or a few pots. Planting, watering, watching things grow, harvesting what they planted.

  • Reading — A shared book club, nightly read-alouds for younger children, or simply time and space to read independently.

  • Household participation — Grocery lists, meal prep, setting the table. Practical life doesn't stop in summer.

One thing not to skip

About three weeks before school starts, gently reintroduce the routines — sleep schedule, morning rhythm, quiet work time. The adjustment back to school is much smoother when it's gradual rather than sudden.

Summer doesn't have to be school. But the habits of attention, independence, and real-world engagement are worth keeping — they're what makes September feel like a continuation rather than a restart.
